Arlington VA Psychiatrist Melanie Yousefi

Melanie Yousefi, DNP, PMHNP.

Board Certified Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner, George Mason University
Adolescent and Adult Psychiatry Individual, Couples, and Family Therapy

As a psychiatric nurse practitioner, I have experience working with individuals from a diverse range of backgrounds, ages, medical conditions, and mental health concerns. I take a combined approach of psychotherapy and medications to treat depression, anxiety, ADHD, trauma, and other mood disorders. In my spare time, I enjoy spending time outdoors, including hiking in the Shenandoah Mountains.

Education & Background
I started my career as a nurse, working in women’s health, including high-risk perinatal, labor and delivery, and postpartum units. It was a humbling experience to share hundreds of families’ momentous life transitions. This led me to the mental health field, where I later worked as a psychiatric nurse in a free-standing psychiatric facility treating children, teens, and adults with serious mental health problems.

Later, I earned my Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) from George Mason University, specializing in advanced psychiatric mental health nursing. During my doctoral preparation, I trained in an array of clinical settings under leading experts in the community. My training included working in areas like child and adolescent partial hospitalization programs, outpatient services, consult- liaison psychiatric services in a level 1 trauma facility, adult inpatient psychiatry, and psychiatric urgent care services.

More recently, I’ve delivered psychiatric care to underserved individuals in a remote area of northern Minnesota. I am also an Assistant Professor and Program Coordinator for the graduate Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner program at George Mason University. I am currently working on a collaborative publication with other faculty in the College of Health and Human Services disciplines focusing on factors that predict successful use of antidepressant therapy.

A Wellness-Integrated Approach
I view health and wellness as an integral part of mental health treatment. Alongside cognitive behavioral therapy, I also encourage patients to incorporate mindfulness techniques and meditation for optimal outcomes.

Through the therapeutic relationships I’ve been fortunate enough to share over the years, I’m constantly reminded of the resilience of the human spirit. I firmly believe recovery is possible through forming meaningful connections and honoring one’s own potential for growth. There are multiple pathways to healing. I strive to meet patients wherever they are on their journey to recovery and wellness.
